On the new CBS comedy Accidentally on Purpose, the character of Davis (Nicolas Wright) has not exactly been much of a ladies’ man – though that doesn’t stop him from attempting to hit on the female characters on the show, to no avail.
However, on this Monday’s new episode, “The Love Guru”, Davis’ luck takes a dramatic turn, when he meets the very sexy Andrea, played by guest star Diora Baird (Wedding Crashers, Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning).
During a recent visit to the set of Accidentally on Purpose, Baird explained her character, Andrea, to me thusly: “She likes to have sex… a lot. And for some reason, she’s really attracted to Davis. It doesn’t make any sense, because she’s really out of his league, but all she wants to do is use him as her sex object.”
Executive Producer Claudia Lonow explained to me that this scenario arises after lead character Billie (Jenna Elfman) , “kind of realizes that at this point she’s on the dating sidelines,” thanks to her pregnancy. As a result, Lonow explained, “She’s dating vicariously, acting as the puppet master for Davis.” With Billie as his mentor, or Love Guru, Davis ends up miraculously getting the attention of Andrea.
Wright notes that a dilemma arises when Davis finds himself truly attracted to Andrea, and not just for physical reasons. Said Wright, “She’s obviously very keen on a sexual relationship with Davis, but clearly she’s an amazing girl and Davis sees that instantaneously. And I think for the first time in awhile, he’s like, ‘Man, if I’m going to mess around, I’d like to have an actual relationship with you, because you seem like a really cool person.’ But she won’t have any of that.”
Wright, who shares his character’s passion for gaming — Grand Theft Auto IV, Call of Duty, Brother in Arms and Splinter Cell are among his favorites — had a lot of praise for Baird, remarking, “She’s so funny, she’s so cool, super down to Earth. She’s great to work with. It’s hard to come in on a show where you’re a guest star, because there’s a dynamic that’s built up and you have to come in and kind of do your thing. And she just fit in so well.” On top of that Wright added, “To be manhandled by a beautiful woman is a beautiful thing. So yeah, it was just an absolute joy.”
Baird in the meantime displayed the same quick wit her followers on on her Twitter feed are familiar with. She joked that her method for preparing to play a character like Andrea was to “basically have sex with everyone,” and when I asked her how it was to work with Wright, she noted he was now standing behind me, and loudly exclaimed, “The guy that plays Davis is a total asshole.” But she made it up to him soon after – As I was talking to Wright, Baird walked by and shouted, “Nick has a big wiener!”
I asked Baird what it was like playing a scene where she sexually intimidates Wright, and she deadpanned, “It’s a difficult task. It’s very, very difficult. He doesn’t make it easy for me,” before adding, “No, he’s great. I think he secretly enjoys it, perhaps. I think it’s actually sometimes harder for the guy I’m usually seducing or raping or something – because that’s what I basically do to him, I rip his pants off, I push him down.”
Baird noted she’d played a very sexual character on several CBS comedies recently, including Two and a Half Men and Gary Unmarried. “I just have fun with it,” she said, explaining that if she was going to be cast as that type of character, it was nice to do it in a comedy where, “Instead of having to take your clothes off to seduce someone, you’re taking them off to get a laugh – which is a very big difference for me. I would do pretty much anything for a joke, for the sake of a laugh. I don’t care. Boobs are boobs. Whatever, we all got ‘em! Some men have ‘em!”
Diora Baird guest stars in Accidentally on Purpose on Monday, October 19th at 8:30pm ET/PT.
